3 Ways Busy Moms Can Use Essential Oils

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

If you’re like most Moms, you’re likely evaluating the ways you can make yourself and your family healthier but may feel like the natural world is a little, well…overwhelming. It certainly can be, especially if you have a lot on the go or fear disrupting your entire family with massive dietary or lifestyle changes. One of the reasons I love and advocate for families using essential oils is because they’re easy to use, even for the busiest of families, on top of being wildly effective for many day-today ailments that can come up when parenting.

I firmly believe that if you’re parenting without oils, you’re parenting too hard!

Essential oils work within seconds, they’re travel-friendly and for the most part, extremely safe to use.

To learn more in depth about how to use oils and how I recommend you start, you can begin my 5-day essential oil email class and grab a quick reference guide for using the 11 oils I rely on most often HERE.

Here are 3 ways you can use essential oils as a busy mom:

Emotional Support

A growing number of scientific studies are citing the importance of deep breathing for reducing stress, anxiety and insomnia (for specifics on breathing techniques, be sure to check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arHDhJmZBnkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arHDhJmZBnk

Inhaling a few drops of your favourite calming essential oil from the palms of your hands can help with yours and your child’s mental health. Your child is never too young to learn some breath work techniques, but you can keep it simple by showing them how to take deep breaths while holding a bottle of oil just under their nose. The benefits of breathing with oils include bringing oxygen into the bloodstream which helps to eliminate carbon dioxide while oxygenating the cells.

Breathing deeply with oils helps lower cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone- too much too often can wreak havoc on the body long-term.

Grab some oils specifically designed to further assist with supporting big feelings of overwhelm such as: Frankincense, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Release, Gentle Baby, Valor, Peace & Calming, Surrender, Harmony and Stress Away.

Sleep Support

Grab your diffuser and a carrier oil for topical use, and begin a bedtime routine that includes some drops of relaxing oils like: Lavender, Northern Lights Black Spruce, DreamEase, SleepyIze, Tranquil, Roman Chamomile or Cedarwood.

Why is the diffuser so helpful? When diffused, essential oil molecules travel through the air, into the nose and affect a part of the brain called the limbic system (which is commonly referred to as the “emotional brain”). This section of the brain helps control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, sex hormones, thyroid hormones, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. Our sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic system. As a result, essential oils can help us combat stress, emotional trauma, anxiety, depression, fear, anger, joy and other emotions.

When applied topically, the transdermal oils enter the bloodstream within minutes and can affect the body’s biochemistry. The benefit is that even if waking during the night is an issue for yourself or your child, topically applied essential oils are eliminated from the body relatively quickly (within 90 minutes) unlike a sedative, natural or allopathic, which lasts much longer and can leave you feeling drowsy in the morning if taken too late in the night.

Physical Ailments

Essential oils have pharmacological (affecting chemistry) and physiological (affecting bodily function and process) benefits as well as psychological (as discussed above) benefits. One of the joys of being a Mom is the constant need to play nurse! Kids are often falling, bruises, scraping and banging up their little bodies in day-to-day play. Yet using essential oils for physical ailments goes above and beyond kid-related injuries. Essential oils can be used to manage pain from menstruation, headaches and migraines, digestive upset and seasonal allergy relief (to name a few).

The possibilities are endless when it comes to supporting yours and your family’s well-being.
